What comics are you reading? [August]
It seems as if the July thread sorta slowed down quite a bit.
I'm starting a new thread because I rely on them to tell me what's worth checking out.
I'm working my way through the second tpb of Sleeper right now and enjoy it more as I go along.
I see League of Extraordinary Gentlemen Vol2 tpb comes out this week. I've read it's not as good as the first series, does anybody care to comment?

Find a way to get DAISY KUTTER: THE LAST TRAIN #1 tomorrow. I thought it was the best first issue I've read in ages. It's about a female gunslinger who gives up crime to settle down. But it's not as it seems as there are robots walking the streets. The ending is awesome, especially if you like poker.

I think the LOEG Vol 2 is BETTER than the first series by far! The characters become much more interesting, there are deaths and change galore, and the destruction even more impressive. My only complaint would be that the enemy - the Martians - aren't quite as central as they could be. But overall it's a sequel that's better than the first.

Sounds like we have a sale.

I picked up Ex Machina #2 and finished it up as well as continuing the series ialways read: Catwoman, Runaways, and now the Astonishing Xmen.
I was intrigued by the issue i saw in the store of Powerless and the issue of The Witches but i haven't heard anything about either of them. The first issue of Powerless is up online to read and i'm working my way through that right this second before deciding if i should pick up issue #2.
Anyone heard anything on Witches?

I haven't read much lately; stuff just keeps coming up.
I did read:
Gift #1 - very promising and interesting premise.
Demo #1 - different, but interesting. I'm not sure if it was as fleshed out as it needed to be.
And some other stuff that escapes me. I have Daisy Train preordered via DCBS after reading about it on 4th rail awhile back, and I'm looking forward to it.

Picked up Justice League Elite 1&2, they are pretty good... but I am having a hard time following it because I don't know many of the characters. I'm looking forward to the 2nd issue of AOD: Ashes to Ashes. And I'm working the Teen Titans series backwards. I'm down to issue 7

These comic threads have never been exclusive to monthlies (at least as long as I've been part of them.
). Anything comic related goes, so post on trades if you like.

Just got done reading 100 GIRLS (which hits stands next week). The book is really good. I was surprised at how much mystery there was. Gallardo (the writer) pulls the reader in deeper and deeper by teasing with clues and hints at a deeper, darker secret.
It's got an X-Files element to it too. Check out the arcana comics web site if you want more info.
Anyone planning on buying FLIGHT tomorrow? Looks like a great anthology.

I've haven't been posting in the comic book threads for a while, simply b/c I'm so far behind in reading my comics. I probably have close to 400 issues, all recent, that I have not read yet. Even my favorite books, I'm anywhere from 5 issues to a full year behind in reading.
Some brief thoughts on recent stuff I've read:
Seaguy is BY FAR the best comic book of 2004, that I've read so far. Art, story, panel structure, originality, everyone should check it out.
Queen & Country: Scriptbook - The best, all-around monthly book published in the last 10 years. And naturally, nearly nobody is reading. I really enjoyed reading Rucka's scripts & seeing how he lays everything out for such a complex, character driven series.
Ultimate Fanstastic Four - Ugghh. Why did I waste time on this. Only for the promise of Ellis. I haven't read the Ellis issues yet but the first 7-8 issues were just terrible. Nothing different, nothing new, no character interaction or development. No story build-up, this book is why I never could get into any of the Ultimate titles. They are fine for kids, but they don't capture my attention. Everything happens so fast w/ no rhyme or reasons aside from they just try too hard to fit in all the stories & characters from the original continuity as soon as possible.

Sessa, glad to have you back, even if you disagree with me.
I enjoyed DAISY KUTTER, but I read an issue that was in sepia tone...I think that's what it is. It wasn't quite Black n White. It was shades of tan, actually, which made it feel warm and western like.

I might have to check out the Q&C scriptbook, I'm a big fan of the series, but I dunno about reading scripts. I heard it had a lot of references/annotations/sketches, so if thats true, I'll look into it.
And I wasn't all that thrilled w/ Ult FF 1-6 (the first arc). I'm cautiously looking forward to starting Ellis' arc with #7 (I too am behind), but if it doesn't capture me, then I'm stopping after that arc. I've never been a big FF fan, even the reg. book (by Waid) is starting to lose my interest (I started with 'Unthinkable').

'sup JP. Yeah, I haven't been reading much lately. Just don't have the time in the summer, when the weather is nice I'm outside, at the beach. Haven't done a thing for Broken Frontier all summer. I love comics, but I barely have time to read them, let alone write about them.
I think it was your column on Daisy Kutter that had some preview pics in color. I really thought the B & W greatly hurt the comic, or at least my enjoyment of it. There wasn't a lot of dialogue, I thought the pages explaining at length Texas Hold'em felt like filler pages, & the ending was so obvious. With so many amazing new comics & me reading sooo much, a first issue really has to have some pop, & good characterization to make me want to look foward to the next issue. Daisy Kutter just doesn't have it.

Hey everyone, if you've ever wanted to read FALLEN ANGEL or if you're already a fan, check out www.paperbackreader.com. Our new reading group selection of the month is the first trade of this underappreciated title. Plus, Peter David has promised he'll stop by to answer questions and talk about the book from the writer's point of view.
I'd love if you all joined in. The DVDtalk comic readers seem to like more of the good books on the shelves than other "super hero only" forums you find around the net. Plus, it seems that you all enjoy talking about comics with a bit of intelligence.

Picked up the newest issue of Runaways, Catwoman, and part 1 of Batman/Catwoman Trail of the Gun.
Runaways continues to be incredible in my opinion and is honestly the best monthly i'm reading right now. Between the twists in the previous issue and then this one.... well this issue's twist i totally did not see coming.
Trail of the Gun i haven't fully read yet, but so far i'm not impressed. The new Catwoman is so much better written and inked than the weird retro one in this book. Then again, i'm probably one of the few Catwoman junkies out there

It's not new, but it is August, so ---
I just reread Batman: Year One, followed by The Long Halloween and Dark Victory. Then, since I was on a Loeb/Sale kick, I read Superman For All Seasons. Then I doubled back to Batman and read Strange Apparitions, which reprints the Steve Engelhart/Marshall Rogers run on Detective Comics. All great books, and they all hold up.
Speaking of Loeb and Sale, I kind of remember hearing that DC was going to reprint their Challengers of the Unknown series. Did anyone else hear that, or was it just a figment of my immagination?
I think the next thing I'll do is reread Preacher, unless there are some good TPBs waiting for me at the comic shop -- I haven't been in a few weeks.
